Job Description

The Visual Communications Specialist serves as a key member of the Office of Marketing and Communications and plays an essential role in shaping the visual identity of South Plains College. This position is responsible for the design, development, and execution of high-quality visual materials that support the College’s internal and external communication efforts.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications, the Visual Communications Specialist contributes to strategic marketing, recruitment, and public relations initiatives by producing creative assets that enhance the College’s brand, elevate its presence, and effectively communicate its mission to diverse audiences.

Qualifications

Primary Responsibilities

Graphic Design & Brand Development

  • Design and produce high-quality print and digital materials including recruitment publications, program materials, newsletters, advertisements, and promotional collateral.
  • Apply strong artistic principles and current design trends to create visually compelling content that supports the College’s brand and messaging.
  • Develop original illustrations, graphics, and creative assets for use across marketing campaigns, events, and communication initiatives.
  • Ensure all visual materials align with South Plains College brand standards and maintain consistency across platforms.

Production & Project Management

  • Oversee electronic pre-press production and ensure accuracy and quality of all print and digital deliverables.
  • Maintain a comprehensive work log of all projects and manage multiple assignments within established deadlines.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to translate communication needs into effective visual solutions.

Digital & Web Support

  • Provide graphic design support for the College website, social media platforms, and other digital communication channels.
  • Assist in developing visual content for emerging digital media opportunities and campaigns.
  • Utilize current design software and tools to support evolving communication strategies.

Photography & Event Support

  • Assist with photography assignments as they relate to marketing materials and design projects.
  • Support the planning and execution of public relations events and campus functions through visual and promotional materials.

Technical Support

  • Provide basic technical support and maintenance for desktop publishing systems and design-related technology within the department.
  • Operate and maintain proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office, and other relevant software in a Mac OS environment.

Collaboration & Additional Duties

  • Work closely with the Marketing & Communications team to support recruitment, public relations, and institutional initiatives.
  • Contribute to creative strategy discussions and campaign development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Marketing and Communications

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise and train student workers assisting with basic design and print projects.
  • Assign and review work to ensure quality and adherence to project standards.

Qualifications

Required

  • Associate degree in Graphic Design, Commercial Art, or related field, with a minimum of two years of professional design experience.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating creative ability, visual storytelling, and application of current design trends.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Art, Technical Communications, or related field.
  • Experience with web design and basic HTML.
  • Familiarity with digital marketing and social media content creation.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple and complex instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence and reports. Ability to effectively present information in one-to-one and small group situations to students, visitors, faculty and other employees of the organization.

WRITING AND REPORTING SKILLS
Ability to write well, employing accepted principles of journalism, is preferred.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, percentages and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
Ability to work with a wide variety of people and participate as a team member to accomplish multiple projects and goals. Ability to meet and greet the public in a positive and productive way.

ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS
Ability to organize tasks and activities essential to performing the specific duties and responsibilities of this job. Ability to organize multiple projects and tasks and meet production deadlines.
